Why a rower

The whole body, and nothing hits the ground

People come to rowers from two directions: wanting a hard session in twenty minutes, or wanting something that will not aggravate a knee or a hip. A rowing machine happens to be good at both.

Impact

Nothing jars

You are sitting down and your feet are strapped in, so nothing lands and nothing jars. Of everything we hire, a rower is the gentlest on the joints while still working you hard.

Coverage

Most of you, at once

A rowing stroke is legs, then back, then arms, in that order — roughly eighty per cent of your muscle mass in one movement. It is why a rower burns through a session faster than most machines.

Space

Stands up in a corner

Both air rowers fold, and the Concept 2 splits in two. They are long when in use — about 2.2 to 2.4 metres — but they go away afterwards, which a treadmill does not.

The range

Three rowers, and you can hire any of them

Hire terms are 1, 3 or 6 months, and all three are available on rent to own. Delivery and setup is $50 on top, and hire comes off the purchase price if you decide to keep it.

BodyworX KR-6000 Air Rower

A variable turbine resistance system, so the harder you pull the more the air fights back — the stroke feels natural rather than stepped. It has a built-in heart rate receiver, a fan that cools you while you work, a PU moulded seat and an aluminium track.

Folds for storage, transport wheels on the front. 2.18 x 0.52 m in use, 0.92 m tall. Up to 150 kg user weight.

C-1000 Air Rower

Ten levels of windage resistance set on a dial, so you pick the effort rather than chasing it. Moulded comfort seat, adjustable foot supports and an aluminium alloy track. The computer covers time, distance, stroke count, strokes per minute and calories.

Folds away and moves easily. 2.40 x 0.55 m in use, 1.13 m tall — the roomiest of the three, and the highest user capacity of the two hire machines at 160 kg.

Concept 2 Commercial Rower

The machine every rowing club, CrossFit box and testing protocol is built around, and the one people mean when they say “erg”. A stainless-steel track so the seat runs clean for years, a fan engineered to keep the noise down, Flexfoot footrests that size in seconds and a computer that records every session properly.

Splits in two to store and rolls on casters. 2.75 x 1.22 m in use. Up to 225 kg user weight. More on why people pick this one below.

The question we get most

Yes, you can hire a Concept 2

From $250 for a month, $400 for three or $700 for six, delivered and set up like everything else on this page. It costs more to hire than the two air rowers, and it is worth it if the Concept 2 is specifically what you are after.

It earns the reputation. A stainless-steel track so the seat still runs true years later, a fan engineered to keep the noise down, Flexfoot footrests that size in seconds, and the computer that rowing clubs and CrossFit boxes record their numbers on. If you are following a program written around an erg, this is the machine it was written for.

And if you already know you want to keep one, the sums are worth doing: rent to own at $22 a week is about $95 a month, against $117 a month for a six-month hire — and at the end of it the Concept 2 belongs to you.

How it works

Four steps, and nothing to pay online

You pay the driver when the machine arrives, by cash, card or Afterpay. No deposit, no contract to sign.

1. Pick a term

One, three or six months, and you can extend at any point. Six months at $600 works out at $100 a month against $200 for a single one.

2. Tell us where

Your suburb and anything we should know about the access. A rower is long but light, and it comes in through most doorways on its end.

3. We deliver and set it up

Our own van and our own crew. It arrives ready to row and we take the packaging away with us.

4. Extend, buy or hand it back

Extend, or we collect it at the end. Decide to keep it and the hire comes off the purchase price.

Owner's manuals

All three manuals, free to download

The KR-6000 manual is one of the most-downloaded files on this site, so it is here rather than buried. No email address required. The C-1000 file is a large one — worth grabbing on wi-fi.

Delivery

Delivery and setup from $50, Brisbane to the Gold Coast

Our own van, out of Yatala between the two cities, usually within a few days. It arrives assembled and ready to row, and we take it away again at the end at no charge.

Outlying areas can still be covered — we will tell you what applies before anything is booked.

Questions

What people ask about rowing machines

Can I hire a Concept 2 rower?

Yes. It is $250 for one month, $400 for three or $700 for six, delivered and set up. That is dearer than the two air rowers, which are $200, $400 and $600 for the same terms. You can also buy the Concept 2 outright at $2,199 or take it on rent to own at $22 a week over 24 months.

What is the difference between the two air rowers?

Not a lot in practice. The KR-6000 has a variable turbine, a heart-rate receiver and a cooling fan; the C-1000 uses a ten-level windage dial and takes a slightly heavier user at 160 kg against 150 kg. Both fold, both have aluminium tracks, both cost the same to hire.

How much room does a rower need?

In use, the KR-6000 is 2.18 m long, the C-1000 2.40 m and the Concept 2 2.75 m, and you want a bit of clearance behind the seat. Both air rowers fold and the Concept 2 splits in two, so the storage footprint is far smaller than the working one.

Does a rower need a power point?

The resistance needs no power at all — all three are air rowers, so you drive the fan yourself and there is nothing to plug in for it to work. If you want to know exactly what the console runs on, tell us the model and we will confirm before delivery.

How long can I hire a rower for?

One, three or six months, and you can extend at any point. On either air rower that is $200 for a month, $400 for three or $600 for six — the six-month term works out at $100 a month. The Concept 2 is $250, $400 and $700 for the same terms.

Is rowing easier on the joints than running?

You are seated and your feet are strapped in, so nothing lands and nothing jars — mechanically it is about as gentle as cardio gets. It does load the lower back through the stroke, so if you have had back trouble, get your physio’s view before you start rather than ours.

Can I rent to own a rower?

Yes, all three. The two air rowers are $15 a week over 24 months and the Concept 2 is $22. Rent to own is financed by humm — you apply through us, humm assesses it, and their terms and any fees apply in addition to ours. Nothing is charged when you apply.

Do you deliver to the Gold Coast?

Yes. We are based at Yatala, between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, so both are standard delivery areas at $50 for delivery, setup and collection. Outlying suburbs can usually still be covered — check your suburb and we will tell you what applies.

How many calories does rowing burn?

More than any other machine we hire, minute for minute at the same effort, because rowing works your legs, back and arms at once. Exactly how many comes down to your body weight, so the daily calorie calculator works it out for you across 30, 45 and 60 minute sessions.

Not sure whether to hire one or own one?

Tell us what you are training for and how long you think you will use it, and we will tell you honestly which way costs less. Twenty-six years of doing this around Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
