Which one

Three kinds of bike, and who each one suits

People usually arrive knowing they want an exercise bike and not much more than that. The difference between the three matters, and it is mostly about your back and how hard you want to work.

Upright

The classic stationary bike. You sit up, much as you would on a normal pushbike, and it takes up the least floor space of the three. Magnetic resistance makes it quiet enough to use in a lounge room while the television is on.

Most people, most rooms

Recumbent

A reclined seat with a proper back rest, so your weight is supported rather than held up by your arms and lower back. Easier to get on and off, and comfortable for much longer rides.

Bad backs, sore knees, rehab, longer sessions

Spin

A heavy flywheel and a road-bike riding position, built to be ridden hard out of the saddle. Fully adjustable seat and bars so you can set a proper position.

The range

Six bikes, five of them to hire

Hire terms are 1, 3 or 6 months. Prices below are for the machine delivered, assembled and collected — there is nothing else to pay.

Man riding an F1 318 commercial spin bike at home

Spin

A commercial spin bike with a 21kg flywheel, which is what gives it the heavy, road-like feel. Adjustable seat and handlebars, foot straps, heavy steel frame. Built for gyms, so it will not mind being ridden hard.

Hire from $200 a month  •  rent to own $14 a week  •  150kg user weight

Commercial — not for hire

Self-generating, so it needs no power point at all. Heavy-gauge steel, 50 programs, heart-rate control and a 180kg user capacity. This one is for gyms, hotels and aged care rather than a spare room.

How it works

Hiring a bike, start to finish

1. Pick a bike and a term

One, three or six months. If you are not sure which type suits you, ring us and describe what you are trying to do.

2. We deliver and set it up

Across Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast. It arrives assembled and we show you how it works before we leave.

3. Pay at the door

Cash, card or Afterpay when it arrives. Nothing is charged online and there is no bond.

4. Extend, buy or hand it back

Keep it longer, buy it and have the hire come off the price, or we collect it — collection is covered by the charge you already paid.

Try before you buy

Hire it first. If you keep it, the hire comes off the price.

An exercise bike is the machine people most often buy and then stop using. Hiring one for three months tells you whether you will actually ride it, and if you decide to keep it we take the hire you have already paid off the purchase price. That applies to every hire, not just some of them.

Rent to own

Own it at the end, over 12 or 24 months

Rent to own is arranged through humm. You apply through us, humm assesses it, and the machine is yours at the end of the term. Weekly rates over 24 months:

Aussie Fit JS-2000$10.00 a week
Aussie Fit JS-3500 Recumbent$14.00 a week
F1 318 Commercial Spin Bike$14.00 a week
Aussie Fit R9500 Recumbent$15.00 a week
F1-8318LB Commercial Upright$21.00 a week

Delivery

Delivery and setup from $50, Brisbane to the Gold Coast

Our own van, out of Yatala between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, usually within a few days. The bike comes in assembled and ready to ride, and we take it away again at the end at no charge. Outlying areas can still be covered — we will tell you what applies before anything is booked. Check your suburb

Questions

Exercise bike hire FAQs

How long can I hire an exercise bike for?

One, three or six months, and you can extend at any point. Most people start with three — long enough to know whether it has become part of the week or a clothes horse.

What is the difference between an upright, a recumbent and a spin bike?

An upright is the classic stationary bike and takes the least space. A recumbent reclines you into a supported seat with a back rest, which suits bad backs and longer rides. A spin bike has a heavy flywheel and a road-bike position, made to be ridden hard.

Which bike is best for sore knees or a bad back?

A recumbent, almost always. The back rest takes the load off your lower back and the reclined position is far easier to get on and off. The JS-3500 is the one we send out most for rehab work.

Do you hire spin bikes?

Yes — the F1 318, a commercial spin bike with a 21kg flywheel, from $200 a month. It is the same bike a gym would put on its floor.

How much space does an exercise bike need?

Less than people expect. An upright is roughly a metre by six hundred, a recumbent a little longer at about 1.4 metres. Leave a bit of room to get on and off. Not sure? Send us a photo of the room.

Does it need a power point?

The F1-8318LB commercial bike is self-generating and needs no power at all. The others plug into an ordinary wall socket — nothing special, no extra wiring. Tell us the model and we will confirm exactly what it needs.

Can I buy the bike after hiring it?

Yes, and the hire you have already paid comes off the price. We will either sell you the machine you have or swap it for a brand new one.

Can I rent to own an exercise bike?

Yes, over 12 or 24 months through humm, from $10 a week. It is a purchase rather than a hire — you are paying the bike off and it is yours at the end.

How many calories does an exercise bike burn?

It depends on your weight and how hard you are working, so rather than quote an average that fits nobody, we built a tool. The daily calorie calculator shows what a 30, 45 or 60 minute ride burns at your body weight, next to the same figures for a treadmill, rower and cross trainer.

Not sure which bike you need?

Tell us the room, what you are training for and whether anything hurts. We have been matching people to machines since 2000 and we will tell you honestly which one suits.
